Aug 29, 2003 – This is the third concept car Skoda has shown since joining the Volkswagen Group. The Montreux (Geneva 2001) became the production Superb, and the Tudor (Geneva 2002) grew into nothing. Even more significantly, two former Skoda designers have moved into very visible positions in the design community: Dirk van Braeckel is now head of design at Bentley, and Luc Donckerwolke is of course Lamborghini’s chief designer.

So let’s see if Thomas Ingelath, the current chief of Skoda design, and responsible for the Skoda Roomster concept to debut at Frankfurt and will have a similar career – then a Czech design job might start to appear inviting and interesting.

The car he has created is a very roomy version of a compact family car. No hard facts but we learn that the width and heigth combined with a long wheel base and flexible interior will make this car appear much bigger than it really is. What we can see is that Skoda is working on a new brand identity, the front of the Roomster seems to be very adaptable to a coming Skoda generation. That detail alone will make Skoda the most avant garde member of the VW family.

Readers with good memory will remember a similar name on a concept car some years ago. That name did not signal Room, however, but Wrooooom. The Peugeot Wroomster was part of the City Toyz collection from the 2000 Paris show.
