November 7, 2002 - Lamborghini will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year with the much-expected Baby Murcy (actually a completely new Lamborghini with a 500hp V10 powerplant powering an aluminium 2 seater coupe, so far known as the L140) with a new design centre that (according to his god-father Walter De Silva) is imperatively to be called Centro Stile Lamborghini.
The new Lamborghini is now scheduled to be previewed at the Geneva Motor Show next March.
The new Centro Stile will be dedicated before summertime next year. In the past, De Silva also insisted that the Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, which he re-established in Arese, be called as it is still called today.
De Silva has a very clear idea of what a Centro Stile should be and do, passionate and very creative, and prefers not to talk of design, a discipline a bit too rational and cold, to fully apply to emotional and passionate cars carrying the charging bull emblem favoured by the founder Ferruccio Lamborghini back in 1963.
The new facility is conceived to be a cross between craftsmen shops and artists atelier where contemporary and progressive culture is mixed with creativity and beauty with the aid of most advanced technology tools. A modern time application of the Italian tradition for car design and coach building.
It did not take too long time to Walter De Silva to get the boards approval for the new investment. He says: my proposal was based on strong and logic arguments for the case and the companys reaction has been enthusiastic. The Group is absolutely aware of the role car design plays in or business and is positively convinced that the Lamborghini Centre Stile will greatly contribute to the development of new ideas.
The new Centro Stile Lamborghini will see him back to Italy more frequently and there is no reason to rule out that the talents working in SantAgata are asked to come up with idea for some bullish SEAT or Audi, of which design De Silva is also in charge. Actually De Silva has conceded that he likes to see the Lamborghini Centro Stile as an antenna sensing the Italian taste and flavour.
According to Giuseppe Greco, who already considered setting up a design studio at the factory for Luc Donckerwolke a couple of years ago, the new Centro Stile will be another jewel in the crown being assembled for Lamborghini since Audi took it over back in 1998, and a strong statement of the Italian nature and character of Lamborghini cars. Furthermore, stressed Greco, "the new Centro Stile will give us the opportunity to offer our clients a very personal service when they want something special or a bespoke Lamborghini of their own."
The new Centro Stile Lamborghini (likely to be soon referred to as the CSL) will be managed by the talented designer Luc Donckerwolke (37), credited for the design of the Lamborghini Murciélago, is being built next to the new Lamborghini headquarters and museum.
Luc Donckerwolke was the obvious choice for the new Centro Stile. De Silva stressed that Luc is not Italian by birth but he has a very strong Italian spirit. He loves Lamborghini, he understands and speaks the Lamborghini language and he is a professional who knows how to create and lead a team. We need people like him, who know how to stimulate emotions. And, you know, Lamborghini is sheer, pure emotion.
