Smart Tridion concept at the 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show

April 30, 2003 - First details have been released on the new Smart ForFour, the first Smart able to seat four adults. At 3750mm long, it is slightly longer than the standard Mercedes A-class.

As with previous Smart models, key design elements such as the prominent Tridion safety cell and the use of two colours have been implemented and enriched with new ideas in the four-seater. The ForFour was developed jointly with the new Mitsubishi Colt, and both will be assembled at DaimlerChrysler's Nedcar plant in the Netherlands.

Buyers of the Smart will have a choice of three petrol and two diesel variants. The 'inner life' of the Smart ForFour also offers an innovative space concept, and typical Smart solutions which will be available for the first time in the B-sector small car segment.

The features of the Smart ForFour are both emotive and functional. Despite its compact dimensions, there is space for all the safety features typical to Smart. The Smart designers have developed an independent car with a strong character for the small car segment, with a new interpretation of the design themes introduced by the City-Coupé, Cabrio, Crossblade, Roadster and Roadster-coupé.

The ForFour is closely based on the Tridion concept first seen at the 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show, and the production version will make it's debut at the Frankfurt show in September, going on sale in spring 2004. Three door and SUV variants of the ForFour are expected to follow.
