Few car designers in the world, if any, have had their work scrutinized by as many top car designers as each of our 20 finalists have. Every judge considered each of the six criteria for all 20 finalists and determined their individual value. Several judges commented on how this aspect of the judging was interesting as it forced them set aside their initial personal preferences.
"The standard of student and professional work was consistently high through all the entries, making the judging quite difficult," said Martin Smith, Executive Vice President of Design, Ford Europe Asia Pacific and Africa. "The designs displayed a high level of professionalism throughout."
The scores for each design entry from each judge then enabled Car Design News to establish objectively which of the entries in the professional and student designer categories would become the winning designs. This allowed for a unique insight into how each of our esteemed judges differed in their markings. Brian Nesbitt, for example, rated designs 50 percent higher on average than Ralph Gilles.
"It's really cool that CDN does this contest. It's good fun to be one of the judges, and it's really interesting to see all of these different designs" Gorden Wagener, Vice President of Design, Mercedes Benz said.
While only our two winners have won prizes, all of the finalists' work is presented in a new dedicated gallery in the Car Design News Contest 2008 section of Car Design News. 17 of our 20 finalists also have their design model presented here as a QTVR file, which enables users to rotate the image and zoom in and out to examine details simply by dragging your mouse.
It is clear that with the hundreds of entries from 53 countries - from Abkhazia to Ukraine and including China, Brazil and India (where the lifestyle scenario design brief was set) - and the high standard of the 20 contest finalists, that the Car Design News Contest has been a great success in its first year.
Car Design News congratulates our two winners and thanks all the finalists whose work is published here for the first time. We would also like to thank all of the hundreds of entrants, Drive for their help in the final preparation of the models you see in the gallery, and our sponsors - SABIC Innovative Plastics and Autodesk AliasStudio - who gave us their support and made the contest possible.
