Chrysler LLC has introduced the new GEM (GreenEcoMobility) Peapod - the next generation of electric vehicles - at its headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan.
Its exterior design is defined by its 'pod-like' shape, prominent window area and organic form. On the interior, innovations such as iPod integration in the center console, mesh seating for air circulation, and the use of eco-friendly recycled and recyclable materials are what the company claims as 'styling reflecting the environmentally friendly nature that has been the hallmark of GEM since its founding 10 years ago.'
Packaged at 2,896mm x 1,448mm x 1,778mm (LWH) standing on a 2,591mm wheelbase, GEMs 72-volt battery system - consisting of six 12-volt flooded electrolyte batteries - with onboard charger generates a top speed of 40kmh on a 'High Mode' with a maximum travel range of approximately 50km and a charge time of 6-8 hours.
The re-designed GEM Peapod is scheduled for production in 2009.
