As we reported last month, Mercedes-Benz has now confirmed it will be moving its Advanced Design studio from Irvine to a more spacious facility near Carlsbad, California this July.

With 3160 square meters of space, the new Carlsbad facility is nearly three times larger than the 1200 square meter facility the company is currently renting in Irvine. According to Mercedes, the space in Irvine is no longer sufficient for the design team to realize their creative ideas.

Mercedes-Benz will also hire additional staff at the new facility, growing its workforce from 18 to 'around 25 employees'. The new facility will also allow enough space to build 1:1 models, something that wasn't previously possible at the Irvine location.

The new studio in Carlsbad will join the group of international Advanced Design studios located in Como, Italy; Tokyo, Japan and Sindelfingen, Germany.

"The substantial enlargement of our design studio in California bears testament to the growing importance of design at Mercedes-Benz," says Gorden Wagener, Head of Strategic Advanced Design and future Head of Design for Mercedes-Benz Cars. "With our studios in California, Tokyo and Como, we have established a creative basis for important markets. They function as our seismograph for influences emerging from art, culture and architecture."
