Face-Off
Yunpeng Xie
As a two seat hybrid, Face-Off has been designed around the premise that the face of the car communicates emotion and should therefore be altered to show different expressions such as happiness, sadness and aggression. There are covers over the headlights to show these emotions and they can be adjusted by the driver. Inspired by the ‘Transformers' film where the removal of masks allows different features and emotions to be seen, the creator wanted to ascribe the same qualities to the car.
London Taxi 2012
Martin Tyminski
The London Taxi for the year 2012 is an innovative design, influenced by the Swiss Ray ‘Gherkin' building in London. "At the moment the only taxi which meets regulation within London is the LTI," said Martin. "They have to ensure that a wheelchair can fit inside and that the car has a 6.2 meter turning radius." Created for the year 2012, when the Olympic games will be in London, the concept is one meter shorter than conventional taxis and features a large DLO accentuated in height above the driver to enable greater visibility along with a spacious feel for passengers. Inside, there are three configurations for passengers, while Microsoft surface touch screen technology enables personalized music, ambiance and internet accessibility as well as pre-selected temperature settings.
Monocycle Speedway Concept
Tom Anable
Focused on oval racing, the electric concept takes the monocycle to the next level. "These monocycles have existed for over 130 years but no-one's really focused on this invention for a purpose," said Tom, "so I wanted to find a place where they could continually exist, without just being an invention or a contraption." That area was speedway racing, Tom determined, building the prototype to conform to high speed circles. Taking inspiration from speedway bikes, Tom fit high handlebars to distribute weight and, after some practical testing, found the ideal location for battery placement to prevent the vehicle 'gerbling' - i.e. moving backward and forwards. The project consists of aerofoils to keep the concept stable, connected to the center ring. The seat has been exaggerated to dominate the profile but it is also functional, allowing the user to distribute their weight effectively. There are two separate suspension systems incorporated: one for the occupant (under the seat) and one for the components.
Dream Car for Children
Sung Min An
The DCC is the result of a complex research project asking 85 students from a primary school in South Korea and 45 students from a school in England to draw their ideal car. Though the students in South Korea favored MPVs, students in the UK were more inclined to like sports cars. The research also compared and contrasted the interests of boys and girls; catfish, bubbles and katana knives, which were then implemented into the design. The modular interior, which can be adapted to suit the childrens' individual taste, was influenced by airplanes and jets.
Renault Flagship Sedan
Byoung-sup Oh
This six-wheeled concept is intended as a Renault flagship for the American market. As there are many entrants in the luxury segment, Byoung-sup chose to create a strong impact visually to differentiate it from its competition and to create a sense of safety often associated with large cars. "The 300C is a success because it looks like a tank" he said. The face of the 5.2 meter long (1970mm wide) car is created through the use of LED lamp technology and its six wheels are concealed under wheel arches that blend to form a singular line. It is powered by a front-mounted 3.5-liter Nissan 6-cylinder engine mated to rear-mounted batteries to counterbalance weight.
Snow Master
Jong Soo Kim
Asking the question: "How can snowmobiles evolve into the future", Jong created a four-person recreational vehicle that can be used for transport in colder climates. The design has been influenced by water droplets in nature, with an aerodynamic look that emphasizes speed. It is capable of achieving 60mph all while hauling people and four sets of skis. At 5.5 meters long and 2 meters wide this concept has a ground clearance of 40cm and a self-leveling suspension. It features gullwing doors on either side to facilitate entry.
