CDN is today announcing the design brief and the start of the Car Design News Contest 2008. Coinciding with the announcement, we are publishing an assessment process - specifically developed for the contest - and confirming our illustrious panel of car designer judges.

The lifestyle scenario design brief (see Design Brief) describes part of a day in the life of three Millenniumites - people who were born in or around the year 2000 - in 2028. Qing Sun, Luana and Sanjay are three 28 year olds going about a normal day in 2028 in three different countries. The cities where they live - Shanghai, New Delhi and Rio de Janeiro - will then be amongst the most culturally influential cities of the world, shaping global tastes in many areas, including car design.

In addition to the design brief created specifically to be rich and relevant for car designers, the assessment process has been carefully developed to ensure the judging of design entries is done as fairly and appropriately as possible (see Assessment Process). Central to this are six set assessment criteria that will be used by each judge to ensure consistency in assessing entries.

Judges for the contest are now confirmed and include top car designers from some of the biggest car brands including GM, Mercedes Benz, Ford, Nissan, Volkswagen and Renault. These designers are based in all corners of the world and together have responsibilities for car design in every global territory (see Judges).

  • Martin Smith, Executive Vice President of Design, Ford Europe Asia Pacific and Africa.
  • Shiro Nakamura, Senior Vice President and Head of Design, Nissan
  • Li-Chih Fu, Design Director, Nanjing Automotive Corporation

With this panel of judges; unique lifestyle scenario design brief; original structure of the contest; the assessment process; and the support of our sponsors SABIC Innovative Plastics and Autodesk, we have developed the definitive contest for car designers. We hope you will consider entering and follow its progress here.
