Car Design News is pleased to announce the Car Design News Contest 2008 in association with SABIC Innovative Plastics, powered by Autodesk, and to present our panel of judges (pictured left). The contest is the world's only international digital car design contest where all designs will be created as digital models.

With the publication of a new Contests section (click on the new 'Contests' tab above) Car Design News is committed to running this annual contest and having image galleries of previous contest winners and finalist designs as a permanent resource in the following years.

We have spent a lot of time speaking to professional and student designers about what they want from a car design contest and have put considerable effort into creating what we hope will be the best car design contest there is. As well as being exclusively for digital design entries the Car Design News Contest 2008 has been developed by us to be as interesting and relevant as possible, with the following unique aspects:

Qing Sun on her morning jog in Shanghai, one of the three "Milleniumites" from our unique lifestyle scenario design brief
  • Unique lifestyle scenario design brief describing the lives of three "Milleniumites" (people born in the year 2000) as they might be in 2028. That really gives car designers something to get their teeth into!

  • Top level car designer judges - including Martin Smith, Executive Vice President of Design at Ford Europe, Asia Pacific and Africa, and Shiro Nakamura, Senior Vice President and Head of Design at Nissan.
  • Two top prizes and two categories of entry: professional designer and student designer with the winner of each category receiving an Autodesk DesignStudio commercial software licence worth approximately $7000, $2000 in cash and 12 months membership to Car Design News.
  • Unique thorough assessment process to help ensure the judging of design entries is done as fairly and appropriately as possible.
  • Start date with announcement of the design brief and full contest information on January 16th, entry deadline of 26th March with finalists then notified and given a further 8 weeks to develop their original proposals.
  • On-line gallery of all finalists and winner work published on July 2nd 2008.

The contest starts with the announcement of the Design Brief and the Assessment Criteria on January 16th 2008.  Entries are expected from some of the best car designers and best car design students around the world, meaning that the final gallery of finalists and winners will showcase some of the most exciting designs ever seen!
