The winners of this year’s Car Design Awards China have just been announced at an exclusive event held at the 800 Show event space in Shanghai. The Awards were hosted by British designer Peter Stevens, and presented to an audience of over 300 global design professionals and China’s finest automotive design students.

The winners of this year’s Car Design Awards China have just been announced at an exclusive event held at the 800 Show event space in Shanghai. The Awards were hosted by British designer Peter Stevens, and presented to an audience of over 300 global design professionals and China’s finest automotive design students.

As ever, the project work of all shortlisted finalists was on display, giving a superb opportunity for the latest generation of young designers to discuss their work and future careers with prospective employers.

Now in its sixth year, the Car Design Awards China competition has been responsible for shining a spotlight on some outstanding new design talents, many of whom will undoubtedly go on to help shape the industry over the coming years.

Once again, the judging panel of 18 design professionals was impressed with the quality of the work submitted for this year’s contest. But following an exhaustive judging process, the winners in each of the nine awards categories, and the overall Student Designer of the Year are as follows:

Best Exterior Design – Jiang Songlin, China Central Academy of Fine Arts
Best Interior Design – Liu Ligui, Pang Jianhui and Cui Wenbo, Huazhong University of Science and Technology
Best Luxury Concept – Ren Zida, China Academy of Art
Best Production Model – Wang Longfei, China Central Academy of Fine Arts
Best Lifestyle Design – Wang Xiangqi, China Central Academy of Fine Arts
Best Eco Solution – Wang Bolun, Shan Zhefang and Zhao Ziwen, Huazhong University of Science and Technology

Best Exterior Design - Jiang Songlin, China Central Academy of Fine Arts

Geely design director Guy Burgoyne appreciated this project’s “well-resolved form, shown in many views and with interior and scenario,” while general manager and design director of Technicon Design, Henning Knoepfle, was impressed with its “sophisticated execution.” The award was presented by Icona design director, Samuel Chuffart.

Best Interior Design - Liu Ligui, Pang Jianhui and Cui Wenbo, Huazhong University of Science and Technology

“An elegant, flexible solution with nice details and graphics” was how design director Shanghai of AB Volvo, Asok George, described this team effort, with Volvo Group Design Center Shanghai’s Gustavo Guerra adding that the work offered “an interesting mix of architecture and interior design that brings a fresh note to this interior.” The award was presented by Richard Chung of Johnson Controls.

Best Luxury Concept - Ren Zida, China Academy of Art

Lear Corporation’s chief designer - Asia-Pacific, Ryuzo Kubo, said this work offered “premium style,” while Johnson Control’s vice president of global interiors, Richard Chung, added that the work was “elegant sculpture mated with an interior that can host a business meeting; a little showmanship with Dynoc also helped to grab judge’s attention!” The award was presented on the night by Technicon Design’s Henning Knoepfle.

Best Production Model - Wang Longfei, China Central Academy of Fine Arts

Our judges were impressed with the winner here, with Sooshin Choi, provost and vice president and professor of design at the College for Creative Studies saying “the design looks quite practical and well developed.” Magna’s Douglas Chester added that the winner produced a “futuristic design considering its feasibility.” This award was given by Patrick Williams of Autodesk.

Best Lifestyle Design - Wang Xiangqi, China Central Academy of Fine Arts

Vice President, North Asia for IAC Group, Brian Pour, acknowledged that the winner of our Best Lifestyle award offered both “transportation and entertainment,” while Qoros Auto’s director, design program, Tim Pilsbury, simply remarked that this project was “very futuristic.”

Judges Award - Liang Feng, Wang Danxing and Ma Renli, Jilin University

This project doesn’t necessarily meet the criteria to win a category outright, but is singled out for credit by the judges for offering something interesting or innovative that truly catches the eye of our distinguished panelists. After a great deal of discussion and debate from the judges, the award was presented on the night to a trio from Jilin University by event host Peter Stevens.

Best Eco Solution - Wang Bolun, Shan Zhefang and Zhao Ziwen, Huazhong University of Science and Technology

This project attracted the attention of Volvo’s Gustavo Guerra, who said “most pollution in China today comes from the construction sector, so proposing an electric machine, with optimized HMI is certainly a welcome solution.” Daniel Darancou, vice president of design at CH-Auto Technology Corporation, remarked how the winning team had made “good design choices.” Yuichi Mizukoshi of Miko presented the award.
