Director, Interior Design

The Director, Interior Design creates and oversees the Interior Design process and supports the implementation of Interior Design projects within the greater Karma team.

Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

  • Lead Design process and brief project framework and oversee Interior Design proposals according to the design briefs. Plus, co-create the new Design Philosophy/Architecture for upcoming Karma interiors.
  • Lead and supervise all Interior Design team activities.
  • Manage, support, and advise development of components/vehicles from initial design to production and complete lifecycle.
  • Benchmark competitive vehicles.
  • Research Interior Design and styling trends.
  • Interface with surfacing, engineering, and suppliers.
  • Comply with regulatory and feasibility requirements.
  • Design concept to production for entire model ranges.
  • Deliverables Research, 2D and 3D Design process.
  • Guide CAD/Clay Modeling teams.
  • Organize/attend design, marketing, engineering, manufacturing, and supplier meetings/reviews.
  • Prepare Presentations for upper management.
  • Cross functional collaboration and issue resolution/negotiation, CMF Design + HMI/UX design.
  • Interact directly with suppliers.
  • Other duties, as assigned.
  • Reports to Senior Design Director.

Experience/Education:

  • Masters or Bachelor’s Degree in Automotive Design or related field preferred (equivalent in extensive experience considered).
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in developing Interior Vehicle Design for OEMs.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in managing Interior Designers and Design Teams.
  • Must excel in a team environment, with strong leadership and interpersonal (people-soft) skills.
  • Hands-on experience with interior color, material, and quality reviews, as well as HMI/UX experience.
  • Must possess strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to prioritize well, stay organized, and operate calmly and confidently in a variety of working environments.
  • Experience in developing production designs for Exterior and/or Interior Designs.
  • Strong experience in 3D as it relates to Clay and CAD models.
  • Eligible to work in the US is preferred.

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Proficient in Adobe Suite, MS Office Suite.
  • Autodesk Alias or Maya 3D sketch modeling, Class-A knowledge required.
  • Design for Manufacturability knowledge.
  • Regulatory Knowledge as it relates to Interior Production Design.
  • Basic knowledge of Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2015) and Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001:2015), as applicable.
  • Fluent Business English required.

Sr. Interior Designer

The Sr. Interior Designer will design and oversee the interior of future models.

Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

  • Design & Oversee Interior Design proposals according to design brief.
  • 3D Sketch modeling
  • Perform benchmarking of competitive vehicles
  • Research design and styling trends
  • Interface with surfacing, engineering and suppliers
  • Comply with regulatory and feasibility requirements.

  • Create original design proposals for entire model range. From overall theme to detail design.
  • Produce 2D Design Proposals.

  • Prepare Presentations for upper management
  • Collaboration with Engineering, Marketing
  • Issue Resolution and negotiation.

Experience / Education:

  • Minimum 7 years of Experience in developing Interior Vehicle Proposals for OEMs or Start Up’s
  • Experience in developing production designs for Interior proposals.
  • Understanding of 3D as it relates to CAD and Clay.
  • Masters or Bachelor’s Degree in Automotive Design or related field (Industrial/ Product Design) preferred (equivalent in extensive experience considered).

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Visualizing proposals through sketches (Analog or digital)

Lead UX/UI Designer

The Lead UI/UX Designer is responsible for a holistic vision of Karma’s User Experience and User Interfaces. This includes research and benchmarking as well as design and implementation for Infotainment and connected vehicle systems in order to establish Karma as a world leader in digital User experinces.

Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

  • Create a world class vision for the ongoing pursuit at Karma to be a digital User Experience leader.
  • Create outstanding visual concepts that are balanced, consistent, and intuitive interfaces within the overall design system and utilize common design patterns and components
  • Translate design ideas and concepts into clear user flows and wireframes
  • Develop look and feel of UI and ensure consistent design aesthetic and functionality throughout the application
  • Support R&D advanced concepts
  • Participate in user research and translate observations into improved UI
  • Maintain deep knowledge of industry UI trends and best practices
  • Rapid prototyping and creation of user interfaces for luxury hybrid and electric vehicles using a variety of industry-standard 2D/3D tools and graphics engines
  • Test, debug, and optimize UI/UX software, monitor performance
  • Own technical solutions through artistic design, development, testing, peer review, and documentation
  • Maintain high standards of software quality by following industry best practices
  • Collaborate with internal cross functional teams, end users, and third-party contacts to design, develop, document, and maintain software deliverables for various projects
  • Establish and lead positive working relationships with technical, testing, and hardware team members across the technology organization

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Graphic Design, Visual Design or equivalent; Master’s Degree is preferred
  • 7+ years’ experience in UI/UX design – infotainment, games, or lifestyle applications
  • At least 25% of career time working in the mobility/transportation sector is preferred. Including proven samples within the Portfolio.
  • Expert-level skills in all aspects of the design process, from user research through to user testing
  • Outstanding visual design skills, with a portfolio demonstrating clean, compelling, modern design
  • Experience with Kanzi Studio or similar 3D tools (Unity3D, UDK, Unreal, etc.)
  • Experience with 3D optimization techniques
  • Modeling / UV experience with a 3D package such as Maya, 3DS Max, Softimage, Blender, etc.
  • Proficient in Adobe Suite
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Basic knowledge of Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2015) and Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001:2015), as applicable

Sr. Design Modeler - Digital Surfacing & Visualization

The Sr. Design Modeler - Digital Surfacing & Visualization will develop, create, maintain, and validate CAS (Class ‘A’ Surface) data within the Karma Automotive Digital Surfacing & Visualization Department.

Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

  • Responsible as well to develop, create, maintain and validate high quality components, assembly & total vehicle surface data required for completing program(s) on time & to the associated process & standards.
  • Ensure relative aesthetic adjustments are incorporated under the direction of the CAS leadership, while working with the Studio designers as required.
  • Ensure relative criteria issues are resolved in a timely manner & updated within the issue management system.
  • Assist department leadership with Digital Surface design reviews & support total vehicle design reviews if needed.
  • Support the Design Studio with concept projects & general studies, under the guidance of the CAS department leadership.
  • Support the Engineering department with relative studies & criteria establishment involving surface data, under the guidance of the CAS department leadership.
  • Create additional CAD data, including solid models, to support various build activities when required.
  • Must be able to create & validate high quality Class ‘A’ Surface data, while incorporating criteria & process standards.
  • Must be able to maintain component & assembly CAS data in the relative PDM system.
  • Must be able to evaluate all associated tasks & apply accurate completion timing.
  • Must display the ability to identify problems, elevate concerns, recommend solutions & resolve issues.
  • Must be able to accept personal responsibility & accountability for assignment execution & quality of work.
  • Must be able to communicate efficiently & effectively with internal & external departments & work equally well within a team or individually as required.

  • Reports to Exterior Design Director (Jacques Flynn) and Interior Design Director as needed

Required qualifications:

  • Knowledge of concept to launch program execution, with emphasis on sketch to clay to scan to surface to solid model design, development & execution, CAS Modeling best practices & DQ&V.
  • Knowledge of automotive vehicle systems with an emphasis on automotive exteriors & interiors.
  • Knowledge of Design for Manufacturing, Best Practices, Exterior/Interior Development Processes, Global Safety Requirements, Regulations & Zones (including FMVSS & ECE/ECC), Packaging, Dimensional Engineering, Continuous Improvement & Aesthetic Design (Studio).
  • Must have a minimum of 8 years in CAS development and modeling, with 6 years in automotive environments. Solid Modeling, Rendering & Animation capabilities are a plus.
  • Bachelor Degree in Engineering or Design preferred but not required with equivalent extensive experience.
  • Experience with Autodesk Alias and Autodesk Vred is required.
  • Experience with Keyshot, Maya, Rhino, Grasshopper (Parametric Design), Blender is preferred.
  • Basic PC skills required (Email, Excel, Word, etc.) PDM experience is a plus.
  • Ability to travel nationally & internationally may be requested.
  • Basic knowledge of Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2015) and Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001:2015), as applicable.
