The success of SUVs has been remarkable story, but one could argue it has also brought an aesthetic homogeneity. As the segment proliferates, fresh thinking is needed. Can designers’ harness electrification, new technology and materials to reinvigorate the segment? An expert panel discuss potential future design strategies.

“The whole point of an SUV is to take away all the compromises that a consumer needs to make,” said Derek Jenkins, vice president, design, Lucid Motors. “They can use the vehicle any way they like, and have this awesome experience. The challenge as a designer is what the darn thing will look like, and how we make the design of the vehicle express its diverse capabilities and attributes.”
