Fiat to go all-electric; Stellantis experiments with hydrogen for light commercial vehicles

Published Modified

Fiat is to gradually move towards an all-electric line-up between 2025-30 according to Olivier François, Fiat CEO and Stellantis CMO, a slow extension of an EV story that began with the launch of the Fiat 500 EV at the tail end of 2020.

In a wide-ranging, but largely inconsequential conversation with architect Stefano Boeri to mark world environment day, François spoke of his vision for ‘electric mobility for all.’ This egalitarian promise is dependent on the cost of batteries coming down, François explained.

“It is our duty to bring to market electric cars that cost no more than those with an internal combustion engine, as soon as we can, in line with the falling costs of batteries.”

François announced that the legendary track on the roof of the Lingotto factory, where the Italian Job chase scenes were filmed, in Turin will be converted into the ‘largest hanging garden in Europe hosting 28,000 plants.’

Looking further down the road, François said that Stellantis is experimenting with hydrogen-power for light commercial vehicles with the first vehicles set to launch later in 2021. However, François pointed out that future mobility would comprise a patchwork of different propulsion systems.

“I think that EV mobility will live together with “traditional” mobility and it will be the same with hydrogen. Most likely, we will continue to see ICE, electric and hydrogen cars or LCV on the street in the following years.”
