New car: Seat Ibiza
First of the VW Group superminis on a new platform
Seat’s fifth-generation Ibiza is the first of the Volkswagen Group superminis to use the new MQB A0 modular platform, which has brought some significant changes to its dimensions: it’s now 60mm longer, 87mm wider, yet 2mm shorter and 1mm lower than before. The wheelbase has also lengthened, but front and rear overhangs are shorter. To come in five-door form only, it’s now roomier, with trunk-space up 63 litres to 355 litres; Seat’s also noting wider seats, more rear legroom, and more headroom front and rear. It’s a fairly substantial repackaging.

In terms of design language, the Ibiza has quite predictably picked up on the cues from the latest larger Leon and recently-launched Ateca SUV, with sharp-edged forms, character lines and creases: the triangular LEDs in the headlights and DRLs represent the new face of Seat, along with the strong X-shape graphic of the grille and lower mask. The sides are quite heavily sculpted, the strong waistline running from the corners of the headlights to the wraparound rear tail lights.

The interior has been modernised, and while it’s familiar VW Group territory, there’s a good sense of Seat’s intention to give a sportier, more youthful feel to its products. The cockpit is more driver-focused than before, and Seat points to an emphasis on horizontal proportions. Technologies on offer include interior LED lighting (red or white) and an eight-inch touchscreen, keyless entry, adaptive cruise control, rear-view cameras plus a wireless device charger with GSM amplifier and a seven-speaker, eight-channel Beats audio system with digital signal processor and 300W amplifier.

Unveiled in Barcelona last night, the Ibiza will be formally launched at the Geneva motor show next month.
