Beijing 2016: VW T-Prime GTE Concept plays Tetris
Retro video-game-inspired lamps could be an emerging new trend, as seen at Beijing Motor Show 2016
Forget the hockey stick graphic, the VW T-Prime GTE Concept’s rear lamps seem to be engaged in a game of Tetris. Or at a glance they appear to be. The reality is that they’re merely individual, square LED blocks, which presumably could be lit up in whatever pattern the designers wished. We think they’re worth noting because there’s a micro-trend going on here with textures. We noticed a few other sculptures and elements of cars with 3D-printed blocks, layered up sections and details that facsimile the 1980s Nintendo game, and tie into a wider trend in the media for using eight-bit graphics.

And most notably, the VW follows Opel’s GT Concept from Geneva, a car whose head and tail lamps did actually appear to be playing Tetris, in full animated form.
