Innovative headrest storage
Hidden space, visible impact
From daily commutes to weekend adventures, this clever headrest compartment keeps valuables safe, portable and out of sight, offering designers a seamless way to combine security, function and style
In a world where vehicles have become more than a means of transportation, designers are increasingly challenged to integrate functionality, style, and security into every inch of interior space. Irving Meisler, founder of the Headrest Safe Company, believes the solution is deceptively simple, the humble headrest.
Meisler’s inspiration came from personal experience. “Being a builder, my truck was an extension of my office,” he recalls. “When it got broken into, my cheque book and credit cards were stolen. I needed a better way to organise and secure my items without making it obvious where they were stored. Today, people are constantly on the move. Whether at a hotel, a campsite, or the beach, they want to keep their valuables safe without leaving them behind in an unattended vehicle. Since the safe locks directly into the headrest, you can go on a walk or a hike and not worry about your possessions.”
The Headrest Safe is cleverly simple in operation. It replaces the standard headrest, locking securely into the seat frame, while a hidden compartment inside holds valuables. “It’s hidden in plain sight,” Meisler explains. “And because the compartment is removable, it’s portable. You can take it with you when you leave the car, or carry it into a hotel room, campsite, or office.” This combination of in-car security and portability offers a new level of flexibility for modern lifestyles.
This simple premise, hiding valuables while making them accessible, speaks directly to the evolving role of the vehicle interior. Meisler emphasises that designers should consider vehicles as extensions of lifestyle, not merely transportation. “Cars aren’t just a way to go from A to B. They carry the tools, electronics, and personal items that people need every day. Designers have the opportunity to create form that is functional, integrating storage that complements how consumers actually use their vehicles.”
The Headrest Safe achieves this without sacrificing aesthetics or ergonomics. Meisler explains that automotive interiors face a constant storage dilemma. “Designers are tasked with creating more storage in vehicles that are getting smaller and have fewer obvious compartments. Our solution creates space within a mass that already exists and is required, the headrest itself.”
The concept resonated immediately with the automotive design community. During an early meeting in Detroit with car seat designers and engineers, the reaction was telling. “After about 15 minutes of questions, one engineer rhetorically asked, ‘How has something this simple never been thought of before?’ That’s when I realised this idea was important, not just to me, but to the industry. It’s a simple, elegant way to relieve stress on delivering storage requirements for OEMs.”
Beyond its clever engineering, the Headrest Safe enhances the overall user experience. Meisler notes that its first major OEM partner was a well-known RV company. “The CEO told us, ‘When you look at all of the RVs in this class, there’s not much that separates them. Having the Headrest Safe gives the consumer an option that no other company has.’ That RV went on to win several design awards and was recognised as best in class. I’m confident that our safe played a role in that success.”
For automotive designers, the Headrest Safe offers more than convenience, it’s an opportunity to rethink how interiors serve users. Whether commuting, travelling for work, or enjoying recreational activities, the safe provides peace of mind without clutter or compromise. “It’s about convenience, flexibility, and enhancing the user experience for drivers and passengers,” Meisler says.
From a business perspective, the Headrest Safe is also strategically strong. “When mass-produced, the safes cost around US$35 each. As an OEM option or standard feature, it’s straightforward to achieve $100 to $200 profit per vehicle. When your company produces millions of vehicles annually, that can be a significant boost to the bottom line.”
For designers who seek to combine elegance, functionality, and lifestyle integration, the Headrest Safe represents a convergence of simplicity and impact. It’s a reminder that innovation doesn’t always require complex engineering, sometimes it’s about rethinking existing elements in ways that meet modern consumer needs.
