Geneva 2016: Lamborghini Centenario is a sad parody of itself

Ferruccio must be spinning faster than this creation’s V12 engine

To mark 100 years since the birth of its founder Ferruccio Lamborghini, the guys from Sant’Agata wheeled out the Centenario.

This frankly preposterous car has had layer upon layer of feature lines, aero devices and brash colourways added. The whole concoction then appears to have been rolled in a glitter of extraneous detailing. It’s a very difficult design to digest.

Devoid of any of the elegance of the cars that have made Lamborghini great, it’s hard to see where the brand goes from here when even the basics of proportions are so brashly cast aside by grafting on a long, drooping rear overhang.

Lamborghinis have often been dramatic, but this is not to be mistaken for being absurd. Great cars like the Countach were attention-grabbing because the mastery of their surfaces and graphics allowed the bold proportions to shine.

Things are changing in the Lamborghini management and design departments and that can only be a good thing for a brand that appears to be losing sight of its roots.
