LA 2015: Cadillac’s XT5 might just be the new premium crossover of choice

One of the quietly confident highlights of the show

There’s a real depth of quality to the latest Cadillac designs and the latest XT5 – the replacement for the SRX – does nothing to sully its form.

Its exterior is subtly sculpted with great precision, as we’ve come to expect from GM of late, and while its overall design themes are far from remarkable, this level of execution is its real appeal. Even against cars such as the Audi Q5, BMW X3 or Lexus NX its design communicates a level of understated quality. Its detailing stands up too – the vertical front lamp graphics have evolved into something both recognisable and clear to understand of late for example.

Perhaps its only exterior weakness is that its platform dictates rather front-wheel drive proportions, with the relationship between wheels and pillars less than ideal.

But its on the inside that it really stands out. Like the bigger CTS the colour and materials choices are very well judged. The mixture of metals, leathers, wood and suede is both characterful and warm and that’s not something you can say of any of its rivals.

It’s great to see Cadillac having the confidence to follow its own path and avoid simply aiming for the same space as its more obvious German rivals. GM has big plans for Cadillac both in the States and China, including three new crossovers and, on this evidence, its plan is coming together.

It might not shout about it, but the XT5 is one of the highlights of the LA show.
