BMW has revealed its iX SUV – a flagship EV that had its genesis in the Vision iNext concept. Powered by a brace of electric motors generating 500bhp, the iX will have a range of more than 373 miles. BMW says it is the first model based on a new, “modular, scalable future toolkit” so expect more iterations to appear over the next year.

It’s big, too, matching the X5 in length and width and its svelte cousin the X6 in height. The design team has paired back the character lines, preferring to focus on precise detailing, increased aerodynamics, and an imposing profile thanks to rectangular contours around the wheel arches.

When viewed head on, you are met with a vertical, kidney-shaped grill that lends the iX a distinctive appearance. The grille serves as an interface for the large amount of tech – cameras, radar and sensors. The grille is flanked by a pair of ultra thin headlights - the slimmest to appear on a near-production ready concept, which are mirrored in girth on the rear. The onus is on seamlessness with flush button-operated door openers, frameless side windows, and a tailgate with no separation joints. These smooth aesthetics cloak an innovative lightweight aluminium space frame and carbon cage, which help increase the range and driving experience.

The capacious interior promises a mix of high-quality materials, newly designed seats with integral head restraints, and an expansive panoramic glass roof. Also, the steering wheel is a hexagon. There is no centre tunnel, which means more legroom throughout and a more airy feel. The centre console takes its cues from high-end furniture design. Technology comes to life when needed, otherwise playing a discreet role in the cabin: speakers are kept out of sight and the BMW Head-Up Display is recessed.

“The BMW iX shows how we can give new technologies a very modern and emotionally engaging design. The car is technologically highly complex, but it feels very clear and uncomplicated,” says senior vice-president BMW Group Design Adrian van Hooydonk. “The BMW iX offers a mobile living space in which people will feel at ease and the car’s intelligence is always available without becoming obtrusive.”
