Porsche Mission E 01

Design Review: Porsche Mission E concept

Many designers’ star of Frankfurt unpicked and explored

Published Modified

The Porsche Mission E concept was many designers’ high point of this year’s Frankfurt Show and provided a glimpse of where Porsche design under Michael Maurer might be headed next.

Sitting next to the revised 911 Carrera it seems deceptively simple as first glance, like all the best ideas. But spend more time soaking up the subtleties of the design and its charm starts to impress.

Proportions (See Above)

1 Golden Proportion
The kick-up in the lower body graphic not only breaks up the visual depth of the bodyside, it’s carefully chosen to maintain a golden proportion of the beltline to the height of the glasshouse – despite the low build

2 Classic glasshouse
The A-pillar points directly to the centre of the front wheel, while the windshield, A-pillar, B-pillar and C-pillar shutline all come to a point roughly equal to the height of the glasshouse. A classical European approach

3 Nice bones
The sharp bone line in the lower door leads your eye directly to the centre of the rear 22in wheel and then indexes with the lower edge of the front bumper side blade and rear bumper core

4 It’s all about the wheels
Meanwhile, the valley of the indented lower door indexes with the centre of the front 21in wheel. That slot behind the front wheel also helps animate the side view, providing plenty of entertainment as you move around the car

5 Economy of graphics
The core of the soft shoulder line is punctuated with the clamshell hood shutline, the side cameras and door handles and indexes with the rear spoiler
