Kick back and relax – the message from Hyundai for occupants of its latest concept car, the Seven. The electric SUV has numerous compelling exterior design details, but CDN was lucky enough to sit inside the concept alongside Hyundai’s head of global design SangYup Lee, shortly after the car had made its global world premiere at the 2021 LA Auto Show.

“This is a living space for families, like a home away from home,” Lee said. “As you can see, it’s not really a typical automotive interior, we have this furniture layout. All the materials we have used are recycled, like the bamboo wood and carpet, and the mineral plaster on the doors, for example. This has really allowed us to create something new and fresh, but also comfortable and relaxing.”

Among the key highlights on the Seven’s interior is the flat floor which allows for flexibility in the furniture layout, the sofa-like bench at the back that can seat several passengers, and the large glass panels on the roof and rear that either make for an open glasshouse or can be used as screens to provide ambient graphics. A retractable control stick tucks away inside one of the front seats when not in use, as do various storage compartments and the mini-fridge. There is even a small shelving unit for books or decorations.

“We are really proud of what we’ve done with the Seven,” Lee added. ”The interior is visionary, based on the Level 4 autonomous driving scenario. We wanted to make the interior feel very safe and comfortable, and I think we’ve managed it.”

The Hyundai Seven concept is due to feature in the upcoming winter issue of Interior Motives magazine.
