Polestar 6 confirmed
Good news for sports car fans – Polestar’s 02 roadster concept will go into production as the Polestar 6
New-car news from electric car brand Polestar is now arriving somewhat in line with the old adage about London buses: ‘You wait ages for one, then three arrive at once’. The latest model to be confirmed is the Polestar 6 electric roadster – which was previewed by the Polestar O₂ concept revealed in March 2022 in LA – and which is slated for production in 2026.
The Polestar 6 hard-top convertible will be built on the same in-house-developed bespoke bonded aluminium platform with 800-Volt electric architecture as the Polestar 5 four-door GT – announced for production in 2024 and which flew up the famous hill at Goodwood in prototype form for the first time this June. The 6’s dual motor powertrain is good for 884hp and, with a targeted 0-62mph sprint time of 3.2 seconds, should be more than enough to put the wind through anyone’s hair. Early adopters also have the option to snap up one of 500 numbered units of the ‘Polestar 6 LA Concept edition’ which will exclusively feature the same Sky blue exterior, light leather interior and 21-inch wheels as the Polestar O₂ concept.
“For a brand like Polestar, we need this as a halo statement,” Max Missoni, head of Polestar design, told Car Design News’ Laura Burstein in an exclusive interview back in March. “We blend this stringent architectural look together with sensual surfacing, and I think that’s what makes Polestar unique.” That look went down very well, judging by the instant critical and public acclaim and confirmation of the company’s sixth model – which currently relies on just one car for revenue in the shape of the Polestar 2 mid-size fastback saloon – will also help reassure investors, an important factor since the highly design focused-brand launched on the Nasdaq stock exchange in late June 2022.
Much closer to showroom reality, the Polestar 3 large SUV launches in October 2022, leaving the only ‘mystery car’ among Polestar’s various veiled teaser images as the Polestar 4. In comparison to the Polestar 3 alongside it, the 4 is clearly a smaller electric SUV and the company has already confirmed it will be a coupe-style SUV, perhaps in the vein and proportion of a Porsche Macan.
“Polestar 3 will boost our growth trajectory,” says CEO Thomas Ingenlath. “It also represents the expansion of our manufacturing footprint into the United States as we become even more global. It is an important next step towards our goal of selling 290,000 cars in 2025 – ten times more than we sold in 2021.”
Quite a plan then, and one that seems to be coming together.
