Smart reveals its first mid-size SUV, smart #5
The German marque has expanded its smart product line-up in the UK, with the smart #5 becoming the third electric model introduced within three years
Building upon the smart #1 and #3, the smart #5 is the brand’s first premium mid-size SUV. Arriving in the UK in late 2025, the smart #5 will deliver an extended range of up to 366 miles and 0 to 62mph in 4.9 seconds.
The smart #5 comes in Pro [entry-level, confusingly], Pro +, Pulse and Summit editions. All models from the smart #5 Pro+ onwards are powered by a larger battery to deliver the promised 366 miles.
With a wheelbase measuring 2,900mm and an overall length of 4,695mm (similar to the Audi Q5 and Toyota bZ4X), the smart #5 is larger than both smart #1 and smart #3, continuing the brand’s move away from the compact city car.
With the design language of “Love, Pure, Unexpected”, frameless doors and flush handles create a smooth body, which in turn can be given an off-road feel on the Summit edition with an electric trailer hitch, roof platform and side ladder.
Perhaps the most unique design element of the vehicle are the oblong front and rear headlights that give the face of the vehicle a gap-toothy grin.
Other sleek exterior touches include short overhangs and soft wing mirrors with a rectangular light signature.
This modern and curved design language continues inside, with oak wood trim, heated rear seats and electrically adjustable backrests on leather upholstery. The interior is crammed with tech, featuring a 25.6-inch AR head-up display, a 10.25-inch HD digital instrument cluster and two 13-inch OLED centre and passenger screens.
The tech focus continues into the audio experience, with a neat lifting speaker on the dashboard and synchronised lighting.
Special attention has been paid to storage facilities, with 34 compartments including a 72-litre illuminated frunk and a rear cargo capacity of up to 1,530 litres. All seats can also be adjusted to transform the cockpit into a resting and sleeping area.
