Volkswagen injects a bit of spice into ID4 GTX

The new Volkswagen ID4 GTX is the most powerful addition to the company’s ID4 line-up, and features some unique design details

The ID4 was first shown back in 2020, taking on a measured approach to design with little in the way of fanciful frills. Enter the ID4 GTX – the new top-of-the-range variant that adds power, poise and some pretty design details to the model.

VW describes this new variant as the “sporty flagship of the ID4 model series.” Key to this is its new all-wheel drive powertrain layout which includes two electric motors, one sitting on the front axle and the other sitting on the rear axle. Together, they produce a maximum output of 220kW or 295bhp, enabling acceleration from 0 to 62mph in 6.2 seconds. There is also a new ‘Sports Package’ trim that includes various tweaks to the suspension system as well as a 15mm lowering of the ride height.

There are also some visual differences when comparing the model to the standard ID4. The front is almost exactly the same apart from the inclusion of three small diamond-shaped LEDs on each of the two sections of the bumper that would be typically used as vertical air intakes on combustion models. These two sections are no longer sitting back inside the body work as on the standard ID4, and instead make the bumper smoother and cleaner.

A new bumper at the rear includes larger wings that run down from the side body and extend into the black plastic. It also features a new finish for the air diffuser at the bottom, painted in ‘Galvano Grey’. These changes have been purposefully made with the goal of making the ID4 GTX appear wider. Other smaller bits of detail, like the GTX badges under the wing mirrors and the high-gloss finish on the roof rails, offer further differentiation between the model and the standard ID4.

On the inside, the GTX comes with a new colour scheme and more flush materials. The upper section of the dash and parts of the doors are clad in dark ’X-Blue’ leatherette, while red stitching adds what VW says is a “classic symbol for sportiness” to the black ‘Soul’ seats. The GTX logo is also embedded into the steering wheel, sill panels, and on the back of the front seat headrests.

Overall, the additions to the GTX version of the ID4 give the model an element of character and charm. It may still not be the most exciting VW ever to hit the market, but the ID4 GTX could perhaps spark a love affair between consumer and EV.
