Apple’s former design talisman Jony Ive, the man behind the iPhone, is working with Ferrari to develop its first electric vehicle
Former Apple designer Sir Jony Ive is collaborating with Ferrari to support the supercar maker in developing its first electric vehicle.
This comes as part of a long-term partnership between Ive and Exor, the Agnelli dynasty’s holding company and Ferrari’s largest shareholder.
Exor said that it had formed a “long-term, multiyear collaboration” with LoveFrom, the company Ive founded in 2019, along with collaborator Marc Newson. The project will begin with Ferrari but with the potential of expanding to other companies.
“As Ferrari owners and collectors, we could not be more excited about collaborating with this extraordinary company and in particular with the design team expertly led by Flavio Manzoni,” Ive and Newson said in a joint statement. “We see some uniquely exciting opportunities working together which we believe will yield important and valuable work.”
Ive will be working with the Ferrari design team on its full range of future models, which is planned to include Ferrari’s first fully electric vehicle by 2025.
The former Apple designer, who helped develop the Mac, iPod and iPhone, will also be reunited with the Silicon Valley company’s services chief Eddy Cue, who has a seat on the board of Ferrari.
Ive launched LoveFrom to years ago, a new “creative collective” after he departed from Apple. The tech giant served as the new firm’s first client. The collaboration between lve and Ferrari follows Apple’s secretive automotive project experiencing a major setback after its head, Doug Field, defected to Ford Motors.
Exor executive, John Elkann, announced in April this year Ferrari’s plans to unveil its first fully electric model in 2025, describing it as a “landmark in our history”.
