Known as the ‘Fight Club of Design’, the Middlecott Sketchbattle Pro saw collage students and professionals compete in an exhilarating spectacle of creativity and raw artistic talent.
The 22nd sketchbattle challenged participants to bring rugged mobility for 2040 to life – pushing the boundaries of future vehicle design with creations that could conquer extreme terrains and unpredictable environments. Competitors had to think beyond aesthetics, considering adaptability, durability and functionaility in their futuristic sketches.
Unlike traditional design studios, where projects unfold over months, here, innovation occured over three rounds and against the clock – with spectators given a front-row seat to watch the action unfold.
Young designers brought fresh energy and enthusiasm, and the event provided an invaluable opportunity for emerging talent to connect with top industry professionals, opening doors for future careers.
Hosted by Brook Banham and Judith Banham, co-founders of Middlecott Sketchbattle, the competitors were encouraged to encorporate the 3D model software Vizcom into their creative process for the first time, recognising how digital tools are reshaping the design process.
And what better place to host the Sketchbattle than Detroit – the birthplace of the American auto industry. The city’s creativity also extends into its deep-rooted techno and underground rave culture which was embodied in the Sketchbattle with a blend of design and music.
