Ex-Alfa Romeo and Audi design chief Wolfgang Egger has been hired by Chinese giant BYD Auto to take on the role of director of design. The German-born designer, who was at Audi from 2007-2013 before moving to Italdesign, has been responsible for a wide range of cars from the SEAT Ibiza to the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, as well as having a spell at Lancia.

BYD Auto, based in the southern city of Shenzhen, is China’s largest brand with over half a million vehicles sold last year, a significant number of them hybrid and electric. It was the world’s biggest-selling electric vehicle maker in 2015.
