Genesis re-designs G70 rear for Shooting Brake variant

Genesis says its G70 Shooting Brake, designed specifically for the European customer, underlines its strategy for the continent

Just days after revealing plans to bring several models to Europe for the first time, Genesis has unveiled its new G70 Shooting Brake (two doors, surely? Ed). The model is an evolution of the G70 sedan that was launched last year, but has been specially adapted with European customers in mind.

From the front, everything looks pretty much exactly the same as the sedan. It features the familiar enormous crest grille, air intakes, quad lamps and sculpted bonnet. Then there is the bold belt line and lower ridge etched along the sides, the same as on the sedan. Even the size of the models are the same, measuring in at 4,685mm long, 1,850mm wide and 1,400mm tall, both with a 2,835mm wheelbase.

However, the silhouette is completely different. While the sedan’s roofline falls at the back above the rear wheels, the back of the Shooting Brake continues to stretch back almost to the rear lamps. As a result, the shape of the backend is almost unrecognisable, with the boot now incorporating the back window which is split by a small spoiler.

The rear lamps are the same shape, but both include two small additional squares that are separated from the main lights and sit on the boot lid. The bumper uses the same shape as on the sedan, but instead of a small twin exhaust system on one side there are now two large circular exhausts on either side.

The interior is also almost identical to the sedan’s interior, but due to the extension of the roofline, the Shooting Brake’s boot space is 40% larger.

Managing director of Genesis Motor Europe Dominique Boesch said: “We are delighted to reveal this bespoke product - tailored for our European customers - so soon after revealing news of our arrival into the region.

“The G70 Shooting Brake marries luxury and European automotive heritage with our design philosophy of Athletic Elegance. Our fifth car in Europe, the Shooting Brake will stand apart through its unique design; it is a clear statement of our commitment to the region.”

Across the pond and in Genesis’ home territory, the company recently took the wraps off its latest design study titled X Concept.
