Volkswagen Tiguan gets a subtle refresh

Subtle but significant – upgrades to Volkswagen’s best-selling SUV give the 2022 Tiguan a fresh feel

Published Modified

Volkswagen has just launched the 2022 Tiguan, and with it comes some new features and design details.

Overall, the exterior is very close to the previous generation Tiguan but for a few notable changes. At the front, the redesigned lights now sit flush inside the top grille section and are linked to the logo at the centre of the car by a thin LED line. The lower air intake area has also been changed, with the outer inverse C-shaped edges boldened with a chrome strip and a body-coloured divider splitting the bottom section.

The sides and rear are almost identical, with the exception of the newly designed alloys, as well as new dual exhausts and diffuser, which now includes another thin chrome strip. Also, the ‘Tiguan’ lettering has been repositioned to sit underneath the VW badge at the centre of the boot lid.

On the inside, the layout is kept the same as the previous generation Tiguan, but a host of new features are available. VW’s latest MIB infotainment system is included, its capacitive-touch sensor designed to enable easier use and greater control with pinch-zooming. The dual-zone climate control system that sits underneath the touchscreen on the centre stack is now operated by touch-sensitive buttons with haptic feedback. It can also be activated by using the voice control system.

The buttons on the steering wheel are also touch-sensitive, and it has a more simple, clean overall design. Heated front seats are now standard, as is keyless entry. Safety has been upgraded too, with VW’s ‘Automatic Post-Collision Braking System’ included as standard. This works by applying the brakes when a primary collision is detected by the airbag sensors in the hope of reducing the chance of additional damage. A wider suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) dubbed ’IQ.Drive’ is an optional package on the base model, but available as standard on all other trims.

Although this latest Tiguan remains close to the previous model, small tweaks show VW’s intent on modernising its core models. The company also recently released the Taos – its fifth SUV that is heavily inspired by the Tiguan.
