Detroit 2016: BMW M2 rights many of the standard car’s wrongs

Shown at Detroit in 2016, the BMW M2 improves hugely on the base model’s form and stance

We’re not huge fans of the BMW 2 Series. Following on from the 1 Series Coupe, it lost not only a large part of that car’s character but also its great stance. Top-heavy and with awkward bodyside surfacing, not helped by those too-wide-set rear lamps, it lost much of the mini-GT charm.

But the M2, just unveiled here in Detroit, resolves many of these issues. While perhaps brutal, the lower mask graphics bring the visual centre of gravity lower, while the extra track width, covered by flared wheelarches, gives it the sort of stance it has been crying out for. What remains are the impressively crisp feature lines that now have some real muscle to tense.
