First sight: Xpeng L03

We are not entirely sure the self-professed 'AI SUV Coupe' sub-segment will catch on, but the new L03 slots nicely into a space that has never been more popular: Xpeng says it will be taking on the likes of the BYD Atto 3, Skoda Elroq and VW ID.3.

The influence of other popular models on the market feels clear, particularly at the front and rear, but as a complete package it is a step in the right direction, moving Xpeng away from the inoffensive yet bland styling of the G6 which, until now, is the only Xpeng UK drivers have seen.

At 4.65 metres long, 1.6 metres high and with a 2.86 metre wheelbase it carries similar proportions to a BMW iX3, Audi Q4 e-tron or Renault Rafaele. It is stocky, and those front arches are remarkably pronounced. It has stance, which we must say does not show up particularly well through the framing of a laptop screen.

Four variants will be on offer with electric range spanning from 445km to 520km and 0-60mph in 7.5 seconds to 4.5 seconds. Long Range AWD Ultra is the best of both worlds. And although this is an EV it will also be offered with a range extender through which a 1.5-litre petrol engine acts as a generator (but never directly drives the wheels).
