The inaugural London Motor Show LIVE CDN ‘Sketch off’ took place on 16 May 2019 and saw some some of the UK’s leading universities pitch their brightest design students against one another.

Held at this year’s London Motor Show, the ‘Sketch off’ challenged students to produce their best sketches in a quick-fire 30-minute period, to a brief revealed at the event.

The contest was judged by leading automotive designers from renowned companies including Bentley, Geely, Land Rover and Lotus, and featured a £500 cash prize for the overall winner.

James Watkins
Creative Specialist Manager
Land Rover

James’ passion for design and cars was developed through the Transport Design course at Coventry University and subsequently the Vehicle Design course at the Royal College of Art, sponsored by Rover.

Early years in the industry were spent working on exterior and interior concepts for brands including Rover, Jaguar, BMW and MG, and a large input into the reincarnation of the Mini family of vehicles.

Appointment to Advanced Design Manager working as part of the Land Rover Exterior Design Team, led to early concept work for many Land Rover vehicles including the Evoque and Discovery Sport, and principally the current Range Rover and Range Rover Velar.

 

Crispin Marshfield
Exterior Design Manager
Bentley Motors

Crispin Marshfield began his career as Exterior Designer for Volkswagen in 1991 working across a variety of projects including lead role in the design of the Volkswagen Phaeton.

He then joined Bentley Motors following Volkswagon’s acquisition in 1999 and over the past two decades has contributed to the development of the Bentley product range including Bentley State Limousine (2002) Bentley Azure (2006) Bentley Mulsanne (2011) and Bentley Grand Convertible Show Car (2014).

In his role as Exterior Design Manager, Crispin’s responsibility has extended to managing the production design programmes including Bentley Bentayga (2016) and the New Bentley Continental GT and GTC (2018).

 

Chetan Chohan
Design Manager
Nissan Design Europe

Chetan Chohan holds a BA honours and Master’s degree in Transport design and his career to date illustrates extensive experience in both interior and exterior car design.

He began his career at Lotus followed by Nissan Design in Japan before transferring to Nissan Design Europe and then in 2013 the new Nissan design studio in Beijing China for 2 years as a Project leader.

He is currently a Design Manager at Nissan Design Europe for interior design and his latest project (the IMQ concept car) was showcased at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, with more exciting projects on the way.

Martin Uhlarik
Head of Design
Tata Motors UK

A graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design in his native Toronto and Art Center College of Design. Martin has designed a wide variety of successful and award winning products for Skoda, Nissan, Infiniti, MG, Roewe and Tata Motors across his 25 year career.

Since joining Tata Motors in 2016, his most recent output have been the Tata eVision, 45X and H2X concepts shown over the last 24 months.

Carl Gotham
Advanced Design Director
SAIC Design Advanced Europe

Carl is an Automotive Designer with over 20 years in vehicle design. A 1999 graduate from Coventry University, a large part of his career has been spent working for SAIC. In 2017 he took control of the UK Advanced Design Studios as Design Director developing pre-production and concepts ideas for MG and Roewe brands.

He has held multiple design roles at SAIC including: Interior Designer of MG Zero Concept, Exterior Designer of MG5 and Concept 5 Showcar, Design Manager of MG GS, Chief Designer of MG CS Concept and MG HS and the Roewe Vision-I concept shown at this year’s Shanghai Auto Expo.
