Advances in interior car design is the next frontier in terms of how we shape the future of the car and mobility. As we move towards ever more autonomy, what we do inside the car becomes loaded with possibilities.

Ford Motor Company’s global innovation ‘start-up’ lab, D-Ford is inviting design students to enter its New Designers Award, which tackles interior design in an autonomous world.

The Brief

You’re going on a long journey; your autonomous vehicle has come to pick you up. How would you create the interior to be interesting, comfortable and engaging for the human while they are taken to their destination? Responses can be from any perspective, physical, digital, activities, experience, lighting, furniture, sound etc. D Ford would love to hear from you.

This brief was set by D-Ford, Ford Motor Company’s global innovation ‘start-up’ lab. D-Ford develops deep human insights and understanding of future contexts to drive the creative process within Ford, including prototyping and testing. D-Ford puts people at the centre of the process. Entrants will be judged based on the D-Ford’s human-centred design process and values, which means insights and ideas are highly-valued, even if the presentation isn’t super polished.

The Judges:

Usha Raghavachari, Lab Director D-Ford (Ford Motor Company)

Amko Leenarts, Design Director Ford of Europe

Betsy Fields-Smith, Director IDEO

James McLachlan, Editor Car Design News
