First Sight: Mercedes F 015 Luxury in Motion

Mercedes became the first carmaker to launch a fully autonomous concept vehicle - the F 015 Luxury in Motion - at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES)

With no conventional internal combustion engine to worry about in the front - or even a regular driver seat - this fully-working concept is based on the electric SLS drivetrain but is envisioned for use with a fuel cell for an enhanced range of almost 700 miles (1,100km). An old school carriage layout with its cabin in the middle of four large wheels was a major inspiration, according to head of advanced design Steffen Kohl, who led the project from Germany.

The idea to have a single-volume vehicle was made early on to maximize interior space, as was the decision to feature distinctive body-colored windows. These are reminiscent of the 1978 Gandini-designed Lancia Sibilo concept, in a good way.
