Sustainability is a big focus for the colour and materials area within automotive. Although companies have been working on it for years, they have kept relatively quiet about it until now.

Car companies are starting to shout about their new sustainable solutions. For example, the latest advert for the new Fiat 500 highlights the recycled fibre which is partly made by collecting plastic from oceans, beaches and estuaries

But sustainability within colour and materials is complex and can take on many forms. Aside from using recycled materials, there is also the possibility  of using bio-based products, or long-lasting products to minimise the need for replacements.

In this podcast, Rebecca Heath, lead colour and materials designer at Envisage Group, explains how different approaches to sustainability could play a role in the car of the future, and how choices made by the colour and materials experts can cater for the end customer.
