Car Design News Student Awards China 2020 competition launches
The Car Design News Student Awards China competition is officially underway. This unique competition brings together the cream of Chinese student design talent and sets them to work designing vehicles according to an imaginative set of briefs set by eight automotive companies. The Awards ceremony will be held just before the Beijing motor show in 2020. This year, Geely, Ford, Bordrin, New Baojun, VW, Nissan, Hyundai and Chang An are asking students to imagine a dizzying variety of future worlds (and even one off-world scenario).

Frankfurt 2019: Mercedes’ Vision EQS
The all-electric Vision EQS concept limousine was Mercedes’ flagship unveil at the 2019’s Frankfurt show. It’s also significant as the first design on a new EV architecture which will spawn other premium electric models as the firm moves to become carbon-neutral by 2039. CDN had a one-to-one chat with overall design boss Gorden Wagener, who explained the new EQS proportions and why a regular S-Class will still sell alongside it.

Kia appoints Karim Habib to devise new design direction
Karim Habib, whose departure from Infiniti was recently announced, has been appointed as senior vice president and head of Kia Design Center, effective from October 2019. He is tasked with devising and developing the future design direction for Kia vehicles, as well as overseeing the design – exterior, interior, and colour and materials – of new models already in the pipeline, and will be based in the Kia studio in Namyang, South Korea, within the Hyundai Motor Group’s new, state-of-the-art, global design centre.
